Ladies at a Gay Girls' Bar: Maggie Lee

A 1990’s teen lesbian explores history and reckons with the power of femininity in this solo dance/theatre performance. Maggie Cee brings the history of 20th-century american fem(me)/butch lesbian bars to life, illuminating the feminine women whose stories are too often forgotten, but whose strength and determination paved the way for the gay rights movement that followed. Featured in Time Out magazine as one of the “Best Pride Events of 2024.” This intimate performance imagines the queer past and passions between people who loved, fought, and created space to be themselves out of sheer necessity and determination.

Maggie Cee is an artist, activist, dancer, writer, and educator committed to community and social change. She is the 2011 recipient of the History Project’s Lavender Rhino Award for an emerging LGBT history maker.

She is the founder and artistic director of The Femme Show, a ground-breaking touring variety show about queer femme identity and femininity. Current projects include Starting from Fem, a solo performance; and The Society for the Preservation and Promotion of Sapphic Social Mores.
